Function of chloramphenicol acetyltransferase

This enzyme covalently attaches an acetyl group from acetyl-CoA to chloramphenicol, which prevents chloramphenicol from binding to ribosomes . The product 3-acetoxy chloramphenicol does not bind to bacterial ribosomes and Chloramphenicol inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting peptide chain elongation
